A little background on Shaftesbury:
Originally recorded as Sceptesberie in the Domesday Book, the town was later recorded in 1831 as Shaston. Many of the older buildings in Shaftesbury are constructed from the distinctive greensand stone, while others have been built from grey Chilmark limestone, much of which was salvaged from the demolished Shaftesbury Abbey. It is possible to see Glastonbury Tor from some viewpoints.
